What is segmentation?

Segmentation is the process of dividing your customers into groups based on shared characteristics, such as behavior, actions, demography, etc. It's an important step in delivering personalized and relevant messages to your customers.

With Lumen, you can create segments based on a wide range of criteria, such as location, user actions, and user properties.

Types of segments

We offer two types of segments: manual segments and automatic segments.

Automatic segments

Automatic segments are dynamic segments that are updated automatically based on the conditions or traits you define for the segment. We automatically move customers in and out of the segment based on their behavior or attributes, without the need for manual intervention.

Traits can be based on user attributes, such as their location or purchase history, or user events, such as clicking a specific link or opening an email. By setting up these traits, you can ensure that your automatic segments are always up-to-date and accurately reflect your customers' interests and behaviors.

Manual segments

Manual segments are created by manually adding customers to a segment, and this can be achieved by uploading a CSV of customers or via the customer page by selecting individual customers. Additionally, a data store can be linked to a manual segment for automated addition and removal of customers.

With manual segments, you have complete control over the customer selection process. This allows you to create highly specific and targeted segments based on your unique needs. Manual segments are especially useful when you already have a specific list of customers that you want to group together.

Create a segment

Creating a segment in Lumen is a straightforward process that involves a few simple steps:

  1. Navigate to the "Segments" tab on the dashboard.

  2. Click on the "Create New Segment" button.

  3. Give your segment a name and description that accurately describes the group of customers you want to segment.

  4. Choose the segment type (Automatic or Manual) that best fits your needs.

Export a segment

Exporting a segment from Lumen is a quick and easy way to access customer data outside of the platform. This can be useful for various purposes such as analyzing customer behavior or syncing data with other platforms.

To export a segment, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the "Segments" tab in the dashboard.

  2. Select the segment you want to export by clicking on its name.

  3. Click "Export" in the top right corner of the screen to begin the export process.

  4. You should receive an email containing the CSV file once the export is complete.

That's it! With just a few clicks, you can export your segment data and use it for further analysis or marketing efforts outside of Lumen.

Delete a segment

Deleting a segment can be useful if you no longer need a particular segment or if it was created in error. Here are the steps to delete a segment on Lumen:

  1. Go to the "Segments" tab in the dashboard.

  2. Find and select the segment that you want to delete.

  3. Click on "Delete Segment" and confirm the deletion.

When you delete a segment, the customers in the segment are not removed from your customer list. Only the segment is deleted.
