Automatic segments

Automatic segments are a type of dynamic segment in Lumen that are automatically updated based on traits you define for the segment. Customers can be moved in and out of the segment based on their behavior or attributes.

Automatic segments are useful for targeting customers with personalized and relevant content based on their actions and preferences. In contrast to manual segments, which require the manual addition of customers, automatic segments are created based on rules that are applied to your entire customer base. This makes them a powerful tool for segmenting your audience and improving your marketing efforts.

Create an automatic segment

With Lumen, creating automatic segments is a simple process. Here are the steps to follow to create an automatic segment:

  1. Navigate to the "Segments" tab in the dashboard

  2. Click on "Create Segment."

  3. Name the segment and add a brief description that outlines the segment's purpose.

  4. Choose "Automatic Segment" as the segment type.

  5. Select the traits that you want to use to define the segment. Traits can include user attributes or user events.

  6. Set the conditions for each trait. For example, if you are using user events, you can specify that the customer must have performed a certain action within a specific time frame to be included in the segment.

  7. Save the segment

Segment traits

Segment traits are one of the building blocks of creating targeted customer segments in Lumen.

A trait is a specific attribute or behavior of a customer that you can use to create a segment. You can add multiple traits to a segment to create more complex and specific segments.

Traits in Lumen can be based on the following:

Attribute-based traits

Segment traits based on user attributes refer to characteristics of the customer, such as age, location, or gender. These attributes can be used to create segments and target specific groups of customers.

To use attribute-based traits, you need to specify the attribute you want to use, the operator, and the value.

There are several operators available when creating attribute-based traits on Lumen

  • Exists

  • Does not exist

  • Equal to

  • Not equal to

  • greater than

  • less than

Event-based traits

Event-based traits are based on user actions or events that are tracked by Lumen. These can include actions like making a purchase, clicking a link, or subscribing to a newsletter. By using event-based traits, you can segment your users based on their interactions with your business.

When creating an event-based trait, you can specify the event you want to track, along with the operator you want to use. The available operators are:

  • Has been performed

  • Has not been performed

These operators allow you to specify whether a user has or has not performed a certain action.

Lumen also provides the ability to use filters to further refine your event-based traits. Two types of filters are available for event-based traits:

Property filter

A property filter allows you to access and segment users based on properties nested within the specified event. For example, you may want to segment users who have added a specific item to their cart. In this case, you can use the "Add to Cart" event and add a property filter for the item name or SKU.

Date filter

Date filters allow you to include only customers who have performed the event within a specified date range. This can be useful for creating segments of customers who have made a purchase or performed some other action in a specific time frame.

Combine multiple traits

When creating a segment in Lumen, you start by specifying how to join the traits in the segment. You can choose to join them with the ALL option, which means that all the traits in the segment must be met for a customer to be included in the segment.

Alternatively, you can choose to join them with the At Least One statement, which means that a customer only needs to meet one of the traits to be included in the segment.

By using these traits, you can create segments that are tailored to your business goals.
